It doesn't seem to do anything better than the existing tools. I tried wave for a few weeks and I just couldn't find anything useful to do with it. Buzz only lasted a few hours. As you point out, I really hated that it tied into Gmail. I don't like mixing private email streams with public information. Like with Google Wave, I couldn’t figure out what to do with Buzz.
